new horizons

Well I never thought fashiontweet would take of the way it has. Thanks to y’all for visiting …

I feel so happy and elated about it, its hard to describe. Yesterday I received my first request to place a banner on fashiontweet. A friend of mine has a cute store in Haarlem and would like to promote her shop on fashiontweet.

So here’s the question of today, how do I approach such a request?  I would love your advice.

Yes you read it right, I got a job! a writing job that is, next to my day job. Check out my blog (in dutch) on viva.nl ….

I was perusing some of my daily fashion and celebrity websites and came across this picture of Ashley Tisdale the very young actress from the famous High School Musical franchise.

The oddest thing happened though, at first glance I thought she was Debra Messing. Isn’t that weird, Ashley is 21 and Debra is 40 ish.

It got me thinking about this trend in Hollywood for young girls to look older whilst the grown ups are just trying to look younger and younger.

Where have we seen this before? the first example that comes to mind is Ali Lohan (she’s 14), whilst a lot of people say she is trying to look like her mother I think she looks like a young Ann Margaret. I even think their voices are similar.

In a world where women are trying their utmost to look and feel young it seems an odd phenom doesn’t it?

I do remember wanting so desperately to be a grown up when I was in my teens, then my twenties came and I thought I knew it all. Then I turned 30 and I realised I knew very little. Now I am turning 34 in February and feel like time is going by so fast. Just saying that makes me feel old… The concept of age changes for me every decade, someone who was 40 seemed old when I was in my early twenties and now that doesn’t seem old at all. Even my aunt, who will turn 70 in March next year doesn’t seem old to me, instead she is fabulous with an amazing short white pixie haircut.

Getting older and wiser is an interesting process for me, the more I know the less I know and the older I get the better I look. Its just that I feel I am beginning to fully understand what looks good, which make up to wear and clothes to buy, and on a deeper level what I want out of life.

I’ll close with saying I love my life right now, I am content with how I look and well, I haven’t accomplished everything I wanted yet, but I have time….

Our new home! I hope you like it, we have very big plans for fashiontweet. The only thing missing is the time to make our dreams come true, so please be patient, keep coming back and I promise to make your visit worth your while.

Populah?

Oh my, I went and got really popular overnight. I wrote an entry (below) yesterday and it got picked up by a journalist who quoted me and now all of you international visitors are reading Fashiontweet. My stats have been pretty good and all, but more readers are always welcome…

I was thinking I could be all cool and aloof, but why? I’m totally excited about it. Thank you Gene Byrd.

This is the link to the story that quotes mine http://www.nationalledger.com/artman/publish/article_272623503.shtml

I was multitasking like a good little girl this morning. Blowdrying my hair and flicking through one of my favourite dutch fashion magazines. I came across a couple of pictures of Natasha Khan, a british singer. A supposed new IT girl. . .

'It' girl Natasha Khan
Whilst I cannot comment on her music as I have not listened to it, the sight of her and her ‘IT girl’ status got me thinking about this pre-occupation the media seems to have with what is considered hip and trendy (i.e. Kate Moss and followers)

I find it truly baffling. Why would we want to encourage people to dress like this? I am totally for diversity and applaud people that I come across that truly seem to have this hip thing down. But like many trends you see so many people around town are trying to look like something they are not. You just want to tell them enough already, give up and dress classically stylish.

Let’s suggest to dress timelessly gorgeous, like Ivanka Trump. She’s young, gorgeous, has style and dresses appropriately for her age.

Good news to most women out there. It seems that size zero is on its way out. Well it’s about time isnt it.  Even Karl Lagerfeld turned some models away from his show stating they looked like third world girls that didn’t eat. I have a feeling it has to do with the current economic down turn. People want to be comforted in a way. Clothes will look increasinly comfortable and so will the girls wearing them. Funny how a rounder woman invokes this feeling of a warmer personality.

Apologees for the non writing of the past few weeks, fashiontweet has gone cold turkey and needed some time off from writing as well.

Yes you read correctly, cold turkey, that means no shopping for clothes, shoes, make up etc for the foreseeable future (I have set myself a specific goal but I am not willing to share it yet). . .  I’m on day 13

The first few days were particularly lousy, it’s hard to explain all the feelings I have surrounding shopping. It’s fine to purchase items such as food and transportation, stuff like that. When it comes to the luxury items though, it becomes a different story. I actually experienced some withdrawal type physical and psychological feelings. My poor boyfriend got an earful of my complaining, but am glad to report the worst seems to be behind me.

When the shopping stops being fun and the clothes are just hanging in your closet you realise something’s up. I have set myself some goals during this time of abstinence, some of my own and some were suggested to me by someone very dear to me.

  • actually wear every new piece of clothing I’ve bought - done
  • organise my closet so I can see what I own (this is a big one for me as I tend to forget about certain items, even the recent stuff) - done
  • organise all my accessories - almost all done, have organised the jewelry but haven’t done all my scarves yet
  • organise my make up, get rid of old stuff, clean the box I keep it in - done

Next to the above accomplishments I am enjoying figuring out what to wear the night before, trying toput together some new outfits that I haven’t worn before.  It’s nice to bring back the enjoyment of what fashion, make up and accessories mean to me.

So there you have it, no shopping reports from me for a while, but I will be writing regularly again and have already thought of a subject I need to research tomorrow.

Love, fashiontweet
